Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

Author: Lisa See
Date Read: Oct 2006

Snow Flower lives in a culture which requires binding the young Chinese girls' feet. They begin when the girls are about 7 years old by malnourishing them, so they become calcium deficient and their bones very soft. As they daily tighten the bindings, the bones break and they are able to fold the toes back under their feet. A girl's future depends heavily on how her "golden lilies" turn out, influencing what kind of family she is able to marry into. A touching story.
